Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just a week after a batch of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier the accused trafficker became publicly available.
He remarked in a release that he was "thankful for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their development".
The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.
The recently released emails demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before the financier's 2019 apprehension for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company said it respected Summers' choice to step down.
"We acknowledge his many contributions and the viewpoint he provided to the directors," the organization remarked.
This announcement comes after the two houses of Congress voted on this week to endorse a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to release its records on Jeffrey Epstein.
The measure will then proceed to the desk of President Trump for endorsement. The President has stated he expects to endorse the bill, after reversing his stance on the subject following pressure from his base.
A group of Epstein-connected emails released by the legislative panel last week referenced numerous well-known personalities in the Epstein's previous network, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those people.
The communications revealed that Summers and Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often seeking to link Summers to prominent international personalities.
After the correspondence were shared with the public, the former official said he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to maintain communicating with the financier".
He added that he wanted "to restore trust and fix relationships with the individuals closest to me".
The economist occupied senior posts under two Democratic presidents; acting as economic leader under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under President Obama.
He presided over Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a faculty member there. When declaring his departure from public commitments previously on Monday, he stated he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Following the economist's declaration on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive policy institute in the capital where he was a researcher, announced that Summers was not connected with the organization.
He joined the directorate of the technology firm, which develops the AI chatbot, in last year - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO Sam Altman.
