The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, along with several anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and disinformation.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict involving the current US administration and European institutions.
